Dimplex seems to have the artificial flame technology figered aot as many owners commented about the realistic looking flame. In reality, the flame is totally artificial, but it does add to the ambiance of the room. At 1500 watts it draws the maximum current allowed for a portable heater. By the way most electric based portable heaters have similar efficiencies and therefore produce similar levels of heat for the same power levels.
